About me
I'm an artist living in Chicago; by day I work as an art director at an ad agency, and by night I work as a painter. I've created this blog to be a window into my world for anyone who's interested in looking in, as well as a place where I can document the process of making my paintings.
About the paintings
It all stems back to the bathroom windowsill I had in my last apartment - the cheap landlord was letting the place fall to pieces, and my bathroom was a prime example of this. Each day when I took a shower I could see the paint on the window sill peeling more and more. There must have been decades worth of paint peeling up, layers upon layers, all different colors. There was red, aqua, beige, cream, black, brown... and with every day that passed more was revealed.
I was seeing back in time. I could imagine what the bathroom looked like ten, twenty, thirty years ago based on the layers of paint that were peeling up. I wondered, how could I replicate this? How could I recreate this thing that I was witnessing?
And that was the inspiration for my current paintings. I layer my canvases up with paint and paper - I'll put down ten, fifteen layers of paint - and then dig back down into it. I excavate the surfaces to reveal the past.
